The primary goal of science is to understand the natural and human-designed worlds. Science refers to certain processes used by humans for creating knowledge relating to developing theories, testing hypothesis, and making greater sense of the world. Science is a way of knowing that seeks to describe and explain the natural and physical world. The students loved learning about ENERGY through interactive hands-on activities to develop a deeper understanding of how energy is all around us, despite it not being visible. Have a look at some of the activities the students explored.
During religious education discussion, the students actively share questions and wonders pertaining to God and Jesus. They are intrigued by the teachings in the Bible and are discovering more about the works of God and his son Jesus. They are beginning to formulate their own ideas and vision of what God and Jesus are like. Today we walked about Jesus and the visual below allows their thinking to become visible.
Have a look at the wonderful work students did on their book bag assignment. Reading is so fundamental to student success. Please continue to read each night at home with your child. They continue to attain new milestones!
Our students were fortunate enough to learn how to play "curling" at St. Mary. We learned about "rocks, the house, the broom" and how the game works. Have a look at us playing below!
On Friday March 23rd, St. Mary celebrated Earth Hour. Our students made sure that NO LIGHTS & NO TECHNOLOGY was turned on for the entire day. We also wrote about how we can protect planet earth and made a recycled art visual. Lastly, we discovered that it takes approximated 450 trees to run the lights for our entire school year!!!
Students have been learning to be critical when it comes to media literacy. Media literacy explores the impact and influence of mass media and popular culture by examining texts such as films, songs, video games, action figures, advertisements, CD covers, clothing, billboards, television shows, magazines, newspapers, photographs, and websites. Understanding how media texts are constructed and why they are produced enables students to respond to them intelligently and responsibly. The grade 1 students have created "original" cereal boxes and some even commercial in hopes of "selling" their product to others. Have a look at these new cereals which are soon to be available at your local grocery stores!!!
The following are videos which can help your child with important rules when it comes to reading. These are videos that they are familiar with but should continue to be used to reinforce concepts learned. We were so fortunate to have an exciting winter play day on Friday March 2, 2018. The students LOVED the various games they got to play, not to mention the cookie and hot chocolate! Thank you to all parent volunteers who made this event possible. Your time and dedication to our school is much appreciated.
