As we eagerly await the true meaning of Christmas, Jesus' birthday, we are reminded to help one another. I would like to thank all families who have supported our Advent project of brining in socks to support members of our local community. The students have been partaking in many acts of kindness. They are learning how important it is to create a collaborative learning environment, based on respect, caring and acceptance of one another's differences.

The students continue to enjoy our art activities. This is reflected in the wonderful work they produce. In this activity, they were exploring pastels and chalk along with incorporating their knowledge of day & night, while producing shadows in their illustrations. I love displaying their work, as they become so excited that everyone in the school can see it. Great job GRADE 1s!
Our class elf has been named Graeme. He will be watching over us, reminding us to be kind to one another as Christmas nears. Each night, he will use his magic to fly to the North Pole and let Santa know how we did. He left us his "magic spray" in case anyone should touch him, which will cause him to lose his magic. Ask your child where Graeme was watching them each day.
The students have been enjoying exploring measuring various objects using non-standard measuring tools (e.g. Unifix cubes, paper clips). We have been learning to measure in a straight line, leave no gaps or overlaps and ensure you measure from end to end.
The class has begun exploring measurement. We have been talking about length and the students took great pleasure in measuring one another with various types of cubes.
The students and I explored the wonderful works of Ted Harrison who creates illustrations inspired the the Yukon and our First Nations People. We also talked about inukshuks and how they are figures made of piled stones or boulders constructed to communicate with humans throughout the Arctic. The class created these beautiful art pieces to illustrate our learning.
The grade 1 students explored charcoal crayons and made these beautiful poppies for our Remembrance Day display. They also made water coloured poppies. We also melted crayons using a hair dryer for our "poppy canvas." I am very impressed with the STAMINA and hard work of each student.
"Lest We Forget" I am so pleased to share that we filled our Jar of Joy. Students have been working hard to show respect to one another, demonstrate acts of kindness, and follow classroom routines to fill our "Jar of Joy." We celebrated through watching an educational video and shared some popcorn. We will see if we can fill our jar once more. CONGRATS GRADE 1 SUPERSTARS!
Trick or Treat!!! Have a look at some of the activities that unfolded in grade 1 on Halloween. Students had some fun patterning with Halloween images, eyeball races, making Halloween cards, and playing other "spooky" games.
In science, we have been talking about seasons along with cycles and sequences. In the spirit of Halloween, we have been exploring the pumpkin life cycle. Have a listen to this song to help your child remember the stages of how a pumpkin grows. In addition, we read a wonderful story to compliment our learning and have learned some interesting facts about pumpkin. Ask your child to share what they have learned! |
